Eating Disorders and Addiction

One common type of dual-diagnosis (e.g. when a person has both a chemical dependency and mental/emotional issue) is the combination of substance abuse/alcoholism and an eating disorder. Although it mostly affects women, this combination can also be found in men.

This can be a difficult dual-diagnosis for treatment because of the complexity of both of these issues, even though they may be diagnosed separately. If only one of these disorders is diagnosed, it can lead to the other becoming more pronounced. Even if both are diagnosed, the treatment of only one can cause an increase in the other.

For example, a person entering a rehabilitation program or sober living for alcoholism may find that, although she is no longer drinking, she still has the strong urge and need to binge and purge, over-exercise, or strictly control what she eats. It is important for healthcare providers in rehabilitation centers and sober livings to recognize that when treating someone with a dual-diagnosis of chemical dependency and an eating disorder, both of these issues must be targeted equally because both can be lethal.

Another reason this dual-diagnosis is so complex is because the relapse on one of the diagnoses can lead to the relapse on the other. If someone with chemical dependency and an eating disorder feels they have lost control (regardless of whether it is an illusion of control) over their eating habits, they may feel the urge to begin using substances again. Or, if they feel they have "failed" at staying sober, they may give up and return to engaging in their eating disorder. Regardless of what the diagnoses are, however, the real issue is that the person feels the need to cover up some wounded part of his or herself with the use of some outside thing, whether it be substances, food (or lack thereof), work, exercise, etc.

What really needs to be treated are the underlying causes of these behaviors. Rehabilitation centers, sober livings, and other treatment centers should be aware of the underlying causes of their clients' diagnoses, particularly if they specialize in dual-diagnosis treatment.
