Addiction: Not just Drugs and Alcohol

When people think of the words addict and alcoholic, they obviously think of illegal drugs and alcohol. Drugs such as opiates, cocaine, marijuana, ecstasy, amphetamines, and prescription pills, among others, are so pervasive in today's society that the percentage of identified people suffering from addiction is on the rise. However, addiction and alcoholism does not necessarily refer solely to drugs and alcohol. In fact, many self-identified alcoholics actually claim to suffer from the disease of alcoholism, which refers more to a set of behavioral and thought patterns than an issue with a particular substance.

There are many types of addictions and those who struggle with addiction and alcoholism can be addicted to almost anything. Common addictions, besides those to alcohol and illegal drugs include shopping, gambling, overeating, under-eating, sex, relationships, codependency, personality addictions (such as being addicted to being sad or happy), exercise, and work, although, anything that causes a positive reinforcement can become an addiction. At Always Hope In Malibu, we look beyond the particular focus of the addictive behavior and more at the person underneath. One of our main philosophies is that each addict or alcoholic has a hole or a missing piece deep within them that they have been trying to fill with the use of something outside of themselves. Because the pain of this void is so strong, the addictive behavior never succeeds to fill it, but often we keep trying, using more and more of our favorite substance, thought, or action. Eventually, we become so consumed with our addiction that other aspects of our lives fall to the wayside. We end up losing and hurting our friends and families, our jobs, and most importantly, our self-esteem.

Our goal at Always Hope In Malibu is to figure out the reason why this hole exists, and figure out healthier ways to more permanently fix it. This is the key to recovery. We understand that recovery is an ongoing process and we do our best to offer continuous support while you are here and even after you leave. The investment you put in yourself through Always Hope In Malibu is one that will lead to a better life and a long-term sense of well-being.
